It started as a way to pass the long lonely evenings in my first apartment. I had not known such loneliness or boredom as I did during that first year on my own as a newly minted adult. So I picked up my old hobby of crochet to pass the long hours alone.
Making toys became a challenge for me. Could I tie a string so intricately that it actually looked like something? My confidence in my talent was so low, however that I would give away or even hide the toys that I finished making. I thought "Who would want something handmade?", so many of my creations were added to a Rubbermaid bin which I stuffed under my bed.
It wasn't until several years later, after having met my Fiance, that I was encouraged to try and sell my stuffies at the Grosse Isle Prairie Dog Railway summer market. Each weekend in the summer, the PDC makes its stop in the small town of Grosse Isle to share a little country lifestyle with tourists from the city. I didn't have much to lose, so with a lot of encouragement and support from my Sweetheart Ron, I set up a small table of items. Over the next few summers I have sold out of items to sell several times!! People LOVED my stuffies!
Although a personal challenge to create new and beautiful crocheted items is still what inspires me, my reasons to continue to crochet and make Toys specifically has evolved. I don't just make toys, I make friends. It started with a need to fill the emptiness, the quietness of my life.... and became a reason to fill the emptiness of the lives of others. To create companions for those quiet times. Silent companions to share adventures and keep secrets, to speak in a language only a child can hear. Their soft & washable bodies are perfect for absorbing the occasional tear, muffle the sniffles, and giving comforting hugs. Their bright eyes shine with only love for their child, an unconditional love that is timeless. These quiet confidants may be around for all the times a child needs them to be, never judging, never criticizing, only giving support, comfort, and love. I crochet toys to give kids a friend and someone to share their lives with.
